This sculpture is created by direct stone carving, which means that it is not based on maquettes or drawings. Instead, my work derives from a foundational concept which is then developed in the act of carving. Each sculpture evolves from decisions made mostly in the moment, often over a month or more. In this way the process remains exploratory to the end. Not only does this approach sustain my engagement with a piece over time, but I believe it more fully engages the subconscious, ultimately allowing for more integrated and developed forms.
Over time, my sculpture has come to focus on portraying a unique interplay between rigorous geometry and fluid movement. I think that somewhere within this synthesis lie the most compelling and nuanced sculptures. Owing to the inherent and essential tension which exists between geometric and organic form, achieving such a merging is a challenge. This challenge is the impetus for making the work and the source of my ideas.

Each sculpture is one of a kind, carved and finished by hand, from a single block of stone. Bases are created from a separate stone.
